FIN 210 Unit 1

Today was the first sketchbook page. The instructions Linda provided were very detailed – and to some extent quite daunting. The sketchbook is clearly an important part of this course and I wanted to start off on a good foot. I had a few ideas, the first simply being experimenting with all the media I have available including graphite charcoal markers conte pastel etc. but i will save that for another day. One of the messages was draw something that inspires you. Ever since I can remember “Lemon Tree in Kelly’s Back Yard” has been one of the most significant art pieces in my life. It was one of the few pictures we had on our wall when I was growing up in South London and certainly the only original drawing. I have put the full story in my sketchbook. I am reasonably happy with this first effort to duplicate it. In doing so with the little knowledge acquired so far I have begun to understand how the artist used perspective and also how more can be less – just creating the impression of a scene can allow the viewer to fill the rest in from their own imagination. I am sorry that we have lost the name of the original artist – I only know she was Australian. The drawing was made around 1960.

Above is Kelly – below is my sketch

Unfortunately the first page in the sketchbook was a misunderstanding on may part of the brief. I thought we had a pretty free hand for the sketches but in the assignment it is much more specific about sketching an object from various plane. Nonetheless I am glad I tried it

Back in the studio we were to develop our drawings we made on the first day further. The concept was to take some component from the drawing and work it up adding color
